In 1968, Yanmar introduced one of the world’s first mini excavators — the YB600. Now, Yanmar excavators are in their fourth generation with seven models ranging from 2,348 to 11,312 lbs of operating weight. The Vi0 Series, which is Yanmar’s primary line, offers six compact models — Vi015-2A, Vi020-3, Vi027-5, Vi035-5, Vi045-5 and Vi055-5. All of these excavators offer true zero tail swing. Yanmar also offers its Super Mini SV08-1 compact excavator.
The Vi015-2A has an undercarriage that can expand from 3 ft, 1 in. to 3 ft, 11 in., which complements Yanmar’s Super Mini SV08-1. The SV08-1 is the smallest of the Yanmar excavators weighing in at a mere 2,348 lbs, featuring an expandable undercarriage which transforms from a 2-ft, 3-in. to a 2-ft, 9-in. footprint, offering a 5-ft, 2-in. dig depth.
The rest of Vi0 Series compact machines range in operating weights from 3,704 to 11,312 lbs. The Vi020-3 features the company’s progressive three-pump hydraulic system and advanced stability control. Yanmar’s three pump hydraulic system is a progressive system that increases both power and speed, while reducing fuel consumption. It also offers precise control for bucket placement and tight working space. The rest of the Vi0 Series share the same basic features as the Vi020-3 and range in dig depths from 5 ft, 2 in. to 13 ft, 8 in. All of the models come with a ROPS canopy, except the bigger Vi075-A, which features an enclosed cab. All of the Yanmar compact excavators have two travel speeds, with the exception of the SV08-1 model.

The Vi027-3, Vi035-3, Vi045-5 and Vi055-5 all come with a standard ROPS canopy, but a cab is an available option. Other options for the Yanmar excavators are various bucket sizes and the choice between rubber or steel tracks. Safety is first with Yanmar — its excavators offer several safety features such as Codura covered hoses, a recessed hose design, recessed work light, rollover protection and larger entry/exit areas. Maintenance can be done in a snap, with easy engine access and one-side engine servicing perfect for daily engine checks.

What’s Unique and Interesting?
In 1933, Yanmar created the world’s first practical small diesel engine. Today, Yanmar is a leading compact diesel engine manufacturer. All Yanmar compact excavators are powered by the company’s diesel engines. Today’s TNV liquid-cooled engines are Tier 3 ready and Clean and Silent technologies provide quiet operation for those sensitive jobsites such as residential areas. Additionally, Yanmar also manufactures its own fuel injected equipment, which fully integrates with the engine for maximum performance. The company also brags about its VICTAS Offset Track System, which increases the excavator footprint without increasing its track width for added side-to-side stability.

Insights and Advice
“I would recommend that they try the brand and model they intend to purchase before making the decision,” says Bill Gearhart, Yanmar’s assistant product and marketing manager. “Renting a machine for some jobs before buying is a good way to tell if it will do what is expected. Talk to other owners and operators to get their opinion on what features they have, what they like and what they wish they would have gotten.”
