Products
After decades of building quality skid steer loaders, Mustang established its compact excavator line in 1999. Time warp to 2007 and Mustang now offers 10 compact excavators each with its own unique features and technologies. Mustang’s excavator product line includes the ME1503, ME2203, ME3003, ME3503, ME3703, 3803ZT, 5003ZT, 6003, 7503ZT and 8003 models.

Two of Mustang’s compact excavators offer expandable undercarriages — the ME1503 and ME2203. Each has the capability to expand from 39 to 51 in. for tough work in small jobsites. Mustang’s 3803ZT, 5003ZT and the 7503ZT are all zero tail swing models. All of the models come equipped with a backfill blade. Yanmar three- and four-cylinder diesel engines power all of Mustang’s excavators, except for the larger 12002, which uses a John Deere 4045RF270 turbo- charged, four-cylinder diesel engine.

All of Mustang’s compact excavators feature two-speed transmissions. The ME1503, ME2203, ME3003, ME3503 and ME3703 have selectable high- or low-speed switches with momentary switches that can alter from low to high speed. The 5003ZT, 6003, 7503ZT and 8003 machines are stocked with Auto2Speed drive motors. The excavators have a low- and high-speed setting, but the drive motors evaluate the load and determine the proper speed for the application. All of the models use both variable displacement pumps and gear pumps for maximum hydraulic efficiency when operating.
Every compact excavator in Mustang’s line has a cab option. The ME1503, ME2203, ME3003, ME3503 and ME3703 all have a canopy version available as well. The 5003ZT, 6003, 7503ZT and 8003 also have a cab option with A/C available. The bigger 12002 comes standard with an air-conditioned cab. Other available options include long dipper arms, counter weights, steel tracks, roof-mounted work lights, rear view mirrors, tinted glass, 3-in. seat belts, travel motion alarms and radios.

The little details make a huge difference during the course of a long project. Armrests on the 5003ZT, 6003, 7503ZT and 8003 units are height adjustable without tools, making it easy to find multiple positions quickly and easily.

What’s Unique and Interesting?
Mustang has equipped all its excavators with topnotch ergonomics. All the models feature light-to-the-touch, pilot-operated joysticks that are tilted 22 degrees off of vertical to allow natural hand and arm position during use. The 5003ZT, 6003, 7503ZT and 8003 units have height adjustable armrests that adjust without tools, allowing the operator to find a comfortable position quickly and easily.
Each of the Mustang excavators have an auxiliary balance control that allows the machine to travel in a straight line during operation of other hydraulic functions. The unit’s triple circuit control allows for multiple functions to be performed simultaneously.
The 3803ZT, 5003ZT, 6003, 7503ZT and 8003 units have award-winning and industry-leading side-mounted engine compartment access with an easily tiltable cab to gain complete access to all service and maintenance areas.

Insights and Advice
“Be as specific as possible with your salesperson,” says Doug Snorek, Mustang marketing manager. “In order to get the most accurate and appropriate recommendation, you need to be forthcoming with the planned details of your upcoming jobs. Lastly, don’t buy for the largest job. Buy for the average job — you can always rent a larger unit.”
