Kubota first introduced its compact excavators to the Japanese market in 1974. The product line was brought to the United States in 1978, broadening the list of potential cliental for its mini diggers. Today, Kubota’s compact excavators are manufactured in Hirakata and Sakai City, Japan, and Kubota proudly offers two series of models, the K-Series and the U-Series.
The K-Series features six models: K008-3, KX41-3, KX71-3, KX91-3, KX121-3 and KX161-3. The U-Series is comprised of four excavators: U15, U25, U35 and U45, all of which feature zero tail swing technology, making them perfect for big jobs in tight working conditions.
Three of Kubota’s excavators have an expandable undercarriage (K008, U15 and KX41-3). Every model in Kubota’s compact excavator line has two travel speeds. Kubota utilizes advanced hydraulic systems that combine flow controlling piston pumps with pressure compensating main control valves. The speed of each circuit is controlled by lever stroke. Increased lever stroke is not required to maintain operating speed, ensuring efficient operation.
All models feature a blade as standard equipment. However, the KX121-3, U45 and KX161-3 models all offer an optional hydraulic float angle blade for increased productivity. These compact excavators also offer: E-TVCS diesel engines; unique hydraulic systems and large-capacity variable displacement pumps; strong bucket breakout forces; two pattern selection systems; and ROPS/FOPS cab and canopy models. Comfort features include suspension seats, retractable seat belts and ergonomically placed adjustable wrist rests. Kubota excavators offer dual element air cleaners, control pattern changers and thumb cylinder mount brackets on all standard models.
The KX121-3 is Kubota’s most popular compact excavator sold in the United States. The model boasts quick, smooth, powerful and well-balanced operation. An auto idle comes as a standard feature, as well as an air conditioned cab. Hydraulically operated angle blade options are available. It is Kubota’s most popular excavator for commercial and residential construction, landscaping and rental.
A cab is available in the Kubota U-Series, offering spacious operator area with heater/defroster, interior light and windshield wiper/washer for comfortable and efficient all-weather operation.
What’s Unique and Interesting?
When lifting street plates or placing landscape material, the front attachment starts moving as soon as the lever is stroked. No dead spots or waiting, no matter how heavy the load, for easy operation. Even inexperienced operators will experience the ease of balanced, smooth operation, regardless of the work.
Excess oil returning to the tank is eliminated, significantly reducing wasted energy. More work is accomplished with optimized use of engine horsepower and that reduces fuel consumption. Kubota’s proprietary E-TVCS engine system obtains an optimum air/fuel mixture by generating three intense swirling flows within the swirl chamber. A special concave recess on the piston head forces compressed air in the swirl chamber to smooth gas exhaust. The E-TVCS produces far less soot and emissions thanks to a better match between the injection nozzle throat and the concave recess on the piston head. The injection pump and nozzle are better matched with the combustion chamber to reduce NOx emissions.
Insights and Advice
“Look for features that lower the machine’s operating cost like easy- to-reach maintenance points, low sound levels (essential when working close to existing structures), low fuel consumption, auxiliary hydraulic hoses and valves as standard equipment,” says Keith Rohrbacker, product manager for construction equipment, loader and landscaper tractors.
“Zero tail swing models are a great bonus when consistently working in tight quarters. The operator can better concentrate on the job at hand rather than worry if the machine will strike an obstacle. The four most looked at specifications are: weight, digging depth, horsepower and bucket breakout force. Don’t forget the reach at ground level and lift capacity of the machine.”
