Products
JCB offers a complete lineup of compact excavators that allows the customer to select the right tool for the job. The company has 11 models that include: the 8008, the micro excavator, 8018, 8025Z, 8030Z, 8035Z, 8040Z, 8045Z, 8052, 8060 and 8080. The company’s most popular model is the 8035 (its 3.5-metric-ton excavator). This model gives the best combination of both power and size with over 10 ft of dig depth, 7,200 lbs of bucket breakout force with 8,000 lbs of operating weight that allows it to be easily towed behind a ¾-ton pickup truck.

JCB offers six zero tail swing excavators — its 8025Z, 8030Z, 8035Z, 8040Z, 8045Z and 8080. The smaller machines (8035 and below) use a combination of variable displacement pumps for travel and a gear pump to provide oil for the excavator. The 8040 and above uses load sensing variable displacement pumps to provide oil to the excavator. All the mini excavators from the 8018 and up have two travel speeds.

The company offers three machines with an expandable undercarriage — the 8008, the micro excavator and the 8018. The 8008 will extend from 27.5 to 34 in., the micro excavator will expand from 27.5 to 39 in. and the 8018 will expand from 39 to 53 in. JCB uses Perkins engines in the mini excavator line from the 8008 through the 8052 and Isuzu engines in the 8060 and the 8080. The 8018 and smaller machines are available with an open canopy. The 8025Z and larger machines are available with either a canopy or a fully enclosed cab. The 8030Z and larger machines also have the option for a factory installed heater and air conditioner
The company’s excavators split the engine from the auxiliary hydraulic valves, which allows for exceptional access to perform routine maintenance or perform any repairs.

Insights and Advice
“Match the correct machine with your job requirements and don’t forget to consider your transportation requirements,” says Dan Rafferty, compact product marketing manager for JCB. “Make sure you are within your local regulations for transporting equipment to jobsites and evaluate the machine with the dealer salesman on your jobsite. In the market, zero tail swing is becoming more popular across the board.
“The 3.5-metric-ton machines continue to be the strongest in the market, but there seems to be an increase in the 4- to 4.5-ton market as some people are replacing backhoes with larger mini excavators.”
