Skid Row
Six brand experts discuss the changing skid steer loader markets.
By Keith Gribbins
In the Valhalla of great machinery, the skid steer loader sits in the halls of innovative American equipment. For more than 50 years, these compact tool carriers have become one of the most popular segments in the pantheon of construction and landscape machinery, creating its own little skid row, full of major manufacturers from Bobcat to Caterpillar.
As tough as Thor, as versatile as Odin, the skid steer has earned its reputation as a rough and resourceful construction tool. Contractors can use it to lift 1,500-lb pallets of brick into a dump truck or attach a trencher implement to its high-powered hydraulic system and cut earth with power. It’s the skid steer’s gift of versatility that has made it so popular in the past, but today it’s also its ability to out-produce its competitors that keeps these loaders rolling onto jobsites. more |

Many contractors reading this publication use trailers on a daily basis to move compact equipment, hand tools, materials and even spoils, debris and products. And when it comes to potential cost savings, the dump trailer is an up-and-coming alternative for progressive professionals looking to become more efficient.more |

Getting Hitched
A Best Practices Guide to Hauling Your Skid Steer Safely
By Keith Gribbins
Skid steers are the workaholics of the equipment fleet. Not just satisfied with dig-and-load operations, these mighty tool carriers often find themselves doing double-duty on a daily basis. Running hundreds of different attachments gives skid steers the great flexibility to do a little of everything on ever-demanding jobsites. One morning your skid steer is hauling dirt and gravel, the next afternoon it’s cold planing asphalt and trenching for utility lines. This season it will no doubt be battling through winter’s worst — plowing, salting and throwing snow. But being a do-it-all machine, skid steers are constantly on the road to the next jobsite. And it’s safe to say that the machine’s added flexibility means nothing if your crews can’t transport your skid steer safely and on time. more
